UNIVERSITY OF KENT SOCIALIST STUDENTS’ SOCIETY

CONSTITUTION

1) The name of the Society shall be: Kent Socialist Students.

2) The society’s aims shall be: to raise and encourage socialist ideas amongst students through meetings and debates; to campaign on issues that affect students’ rights and welfare and other issues in accordance with socialist principles; to actively build support for students and workers in struggle in other institutions, towns, cities and countries; to call for trade unions to break the links with New Labour, as a step towards funding other candidates in order to build a new mass workers’ party.

3) Membership of the Society shall be extended to all members of the University who are in broad agreements with our aims. There shall be an annual fee for membership, which shall be £3 per member. It shall not refuse an application for membership on the grounds of race, sex, sexual orientation, nationality, disability or any other discrimination. All members shall have full voting rights at Society meetings.

4) Ordinary meetings shall be held weekly during term time. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Society shall be held each year in the Summer Term. The time and venue of this meeting will be determined and publicised by the Committee at least fourteen Full Term days beforehand.

5) The Committee shall be elected at the AGM. Nominations for the Committee must be submitted to the secretary at least three Full Term days before the AGM. Any member of the Society may be nominated for any committee post by two other members of the society. Votes shall be counted by two persons chosen at the AGM and who are not candidates for committee posts. The committee may at its discretion co-opt additional Committee members to itself where it perceives the need, or to fill vacancies that may arise.

6) The Committee shall consist of: Secretary, Deputy Secretary Chair and Treasurer. The branch has the right to recall any committee member based on a majority decision of members.

7) Amendments to this Constitution may be proposed by any six members of the Society, and must be submitted to the secretary in writing. This Constitution may only be amended at an AGM, or a meeting specially called for that purpose. No vote on a constitutional amendment shall be valid unless at least one quarter of the Society’s membership is present at the meeting.
